Sometimes it takes an event, an incident, an illness – a catalyst that is a life-changing moment where life will never be the same again. There is no faster way to snap you out of the rut and have you reflecting on everything you are, everything you have done, the people around you, the events in your life and possibly that life is so very precious and deserves to be lived to the fullest each and every day. Well there have been two events in my life which have required courage and resilience and through these experiences I have come to understand intimately the importance of Self-Mastery and Self-Leadership. Let me share with you…
“In 1990, at the age of 29, I arrived in Australia with my wonderful husband and our first son who was 14 months old to begin a new life. We had tired of the deteriorating situation that existed in our homeland, Zimbabwe, and we were determined that we wanted to offer our children something more than food and fuel shortages, a devaluing economy, deteriorating health and education services, and concerning security and safety in their own home. After a brief visit to Australia in 1986 we applied to emigrate to Queensland Australia and after three years of paper work, fees, police and medical checks we were accepted and granted residency visas. Crunch time had come – whilst it was what we had aimed for we now had an incredibly wrenching task of saying good-bye to all our family and friends. Needless to say this broke our hearts and it took every bit of courage, resilience and self-leadership that we could muster to get us through this. What we were confident about was that this move was going to give us the opportunity to offer our children a brighter future. We arrived with Au$ 365 in our pockets, our love for one another and a small collection of personal belongings and so our life in Australia began. We had no family, friends or job opportunities to come to – it was all up to us and within 2 years of our arrival we had another wonderful son. Those first few years were so tough but we did meet some wonderful people who so willing gave of themselves to assist us. It took a while and after many years of long hours, hard work, loneliness and many challenges, we gradually built a wonderful life for ourselves.
I do now however reflect on how, through necessity, our lives became one continual journey of work, work and more work. And yes that endless rut and perpetual rat race very much applied to me. Then a real blow was felt in December 2005 when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Nothing could have ever prepared me for that moment when the Doctor confirmed my worst fears. It was like my whole life just flashed in front of my eyes like a slow motion film and then I was left wondering how it was going to end. Well in fact I now believe that this was somewhat of a ‘new beginning’ because of the mindset that I adopted and the direction that I decided to take my life. Over the last 4 years, Step Up To Your Success has evolved through hard work and determination and a philosophy to make the absolute best of each and every day.”
